
Getting Your UV Curing Right: The Truth About Gallium Iodide Lamps
If you’ve ever dealt with thick-film inks or heavy coatings, you know the frustration of “surface curing.” It’s a nightmare. The top looks perfect—dry and hard—but the bottom is still basically a liquid. Then, the whole thing peels or shrinks, and you’ve just wasted a huge batch of product. That’s where gallium iodide lamps come in. Standard mercury lamps are great for some things, but they struggle to get deep into a thick coating. By adding gallium to the mix, we shift the light toward longer wavelengths. Think of it as a deeper reach. Instead of just hitting the surface, the UV light actually penetrates the substrate. It makes sure the bottom layers cure at the same time as the top. This is a lifesaver if you’re running inks with heavy pigments. Without that spectral shift, you’ll start seeing “wrinkling” on the surface. It happens because the top skin hardens too fast, trapping the wet ink underneath. It looks messy, and it’s a pain to fix. But here is the catch. You can’t just pull out a mercury lamp and pop in a gallium one. They don’t play by the same rules. Gallium lamps need different starting voltages, so if your ballast isn’t matched to the lamp’s impedance, you’re going to have a bad time. We build our tubes to tight tolerances so they fit your reflectors perfectly, and we use high-grade quartz to make sure they don’t burn out prematurely. But the power supply is where most people trip up. Check your specs first. And keep an eye on your heat. High-wattage gallium lamps pack a punch, but they gethot. Really hot. If your conveyor is moving slowly, that heat can actually warp your PET or thin plastic films. You have to find that sweet spot between the power of the lamp and what your cooling system can actually handle. We don’t believe in just shipping you a part and wishing you luck.
