
How to Not Blind Yourself (and Keep Your UV Lamps Running)
Look, UV germicidal lamps are great for curing ink fast and keeping things sterile in a small shop, but they don’t play nice. We’re talking about shortwave radiation here. If you aren’t careful, you’re looking at nasty skin burns or permanent eye damage. It’s not worth the risk. Safety has to come before convenience, every single time. Keeping the radiation where it belongs We always build our custom systems with closed-loop housing. Period. You can’t just run these lamps open-air and hope for the best. You also have to be picky about your materials. Most standard plastics will just get brittle and crack under constant UV exposure. That’s why we stick to powder-coated aluminum or stainless steel. It keeps the radiation inside the box and out of your face. And please, for the love of everything, use interlock switches. The second someone opens that curing chamber, the power needs to kill instantly. No exceptions. Power and Heat Most of these lamps rely on high-voltage ballasts to keep a stable arc. Before you go installing a high-wattage array, double-check your shop’s wiring. You don’t want to trip every breaker in the building. Then there’s the heat. These things get hot. Really hot. If your fans die or something blocks the airflow, the temperature spikes. When that happens, your UV intensity drops and your electrodes burn out way faster than they should. We use reflectors to push the energy toward your project, but you still need a solid exhaust system to pull that heat away from the tubes. The “Do’s and Don’ts” of Maintenance Here’s a pro tip: Quartz glass is incredibly finicky. If you touch a bulb with your bare hands, the oils from your skin create these tiny hotspots. Over time, the glass stresses out and the bulb fails early. It’s a pain, but always wipe the tubes down with isopropyl alcohol before you flip the switch. Also, keep a log of your lamp hours. Here’s the tricky part: a bulb can still glow blue even after it’s stopped producing effective UV light. If you don’t replace them on a schedule, you’ll end up with ink that just won’t cure, and you’ll be scratching your head wondering why.
